Kathmandu: A new case has been registered in Parsa against Rabi Lamichhane, president of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), on charges of cooperative fraud and organized crime, adding to his growing legal troubles.
Lamichhane, who is already in custody at Bhairahawa Prison in connection with the Supreme Cooperative fraud case in Rupandehi, now faces a fresh charge for allegedly embezzling Rs 57.43 million from Sano Paila Cooperative in Parsa.
The case, which includes 29 individuals as defendants, alleges a total embezzlement of Rs 1.32 billion from the cooperative, whose former director and patron is GB Rai. The cooperative reportedly has around 800 depositors.
Although the District Government Attorney’s Office, Parsa received the police investigation report as early as April 14, the registration of the case was delayed. The police report concluded that Lamichhane and others had misappropriated large amounts of saver deposits.
With this, Lamichhane is now accused in five different cooperative fraud cases, further deepening the political and legal crisis surrounding the RSP leader.
